Have you ever been handed a Reed 1 book and blanched at the prospect of switching from flute to clarinet and back again in short order? Or been called on to play piccolo and alto flute back-to-back in a flute choir? Ever wondered if there might be tips for how to accomplish the mental, physical, and aural challenges associated with jumping from instrument to instrument? Or, maybe you just love Broadway shows and New York City's vibrant music scene.
The Flute Society of Greater Philadelphia is thrilled to invite you to a Lunch and Learn Zoom session with Broadway woodwind doubler Todd Groves (toddgrovesmusic.com) on Monday July 31, 2023 at 12:00 noon. He will share lessons learned from other instruments that can apply to flutes and offer suggestions on switching amongst instruments. As time allows, he will discuss styles and musical tips gleaned from his years playing Broadway shows and commercial gigs in New York.
Todd Groves lives and performs in NYC on saxophones, flutes, clarinets, recorders, and world flutes in a wide range of styles. He can be heard regularly in Broadway pit orchestras, on concert stages, in clubs, and on many recordings. He has performed with the New York Philharmonic, Metropolitan Opera, Philadelphia Orchestra, the Knights, and many other top ensembles. He is adjunct professor of saxophone and jazz at the University of Delaware, adjunct professor of saxophone at Brooklyn College, and adjunct professor of woodwind doubling at New Jersey City University. Todd is the alto player in the New York Saxophone Quartet and the tenor player in the New Jersey Saxophone Quartet. He is one half of the Badger.Mantis Duo with his wife, flutist Lish Lindsey (FSGP board member and administrative secretary) and can be heard throughout NYC playing jazz and funk music with many groups. Currently playing Reed 1 for the Tony Award-winning revival of Parade, in August he will return to Disney's Aladdin on Broadway, where he has been the regular Reed 1 player since its opening in 2014. From 2009-2020 he was in the orchestra for the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. He is a regular member of NY City Center’s Encores orchestra, performing for over 20 shows in their acclaimed revival series since 2008, and he has been the regular in the orchestras of 10 other Broadway shows.
