Carl Reinecke's Undine Sonata for Flute and Piano
Hristina Blagoeva, presenter
2:20 p.m. to 3:10 p.m. - Room 225
Carl Reinecke’s Undine Sonata for flute and piano is based on Friedrich de la Motte Foque’s tale “Undine.” This lecture examines how the “Undine” story is depicted on various levels in the sonata and brings an understanding of the story, to help participants create an interpretation of the piece. A brief overview of the plot of the tale is given, along with a brief discussion of previous scholarly interpretations of the piece. Dr. Blagoeva will present her interpretation of the relationship between story and sonata, which will necessarily include an analysis of the piece in order to explore the development of musical and programmatic characters through the movements of the sonata. The lecture will discuss how themes are presented and transformed over the course of the piece and conjecture connections with the story, and how that can affect an interpretation of the work.
