2024 Flute Society of Greater Philadelphia Competitions!


There is no residency requirement to enter the competitions.  However, your membership with the Flute Society of Greater Philadelphia must be current to access the entry forms. These forms will become available to members in the coming months. Please renew or join the Flute Society here





2024 COMPETITION REPERTOIRE

This season's Young Artist and Collegiate Artist competitions will be held live, in person at West Chester University, as part of the March 2, 2024 Flute Fair.  The Youth Artist divisions are held separately, at the Community Music School in Trappe, PA on April 21, 2024.
 

YOUNG ARTIST COMPETITION
Entrants must be age 18-30 as of March 2, 2024.

ENTRY DEADLINE
Entry form, fee, and Preliminary Round Audio Recordings due December 28, 2023. Notifications to those advancing to the final round will be on January 14, 2024.

REPERTOIRE (PRELIMINARY RECORDED ROUND)

Choice of ONE of the following pieces for solo/unaccompanied flute:

  • J. Hotteterre - Echos (no repeats) [Edition: C.F. Peters: The Solo Flute Book 1 - Baroque (Die Soloflöte Band I: Barock) - pages 10-11]

-or-

  • J. Quantz - Preludio in D (no repeats) [Edition: C.F. Peters: The Solo Flute Book 1 - Baroque (Die Soloflöte Band I: Barock) - pages 58-59]

AND

Choice of ONE of the following pieces for solo/unaccompanied flute:

  • E. Brown - Trillium for Solo Flute [Edition: Quetzal]

-or-

  • C. Delaney - “…And the Strange Unknown Flowers” for Unaccompanied Flute [Edition: Southern Music]

Up to Six (6) entrants will advance to the Final Round to perform live at the Wells School of Music, West Chester University of PA, on Friday March 1, 2024. Winners will perform on the winners' recital on March 2, 2024 at the flute fair.

REPERTOIRE (FINAL ROUND)

Choice of ONE of the following pieces for solo/unaccompanied flute:

COLLEGIATE ARTIST COMPETITION

Entrants must be enrolled in an undergraduate program at an institute of higher education for the complete 2023-2024 school year. Entrants must be the age of majority in Pennsylvania (18 years old) at the time of the live round on March 1, 2024.

Entry form, fee, and Preliminary Round Audio Recordings due December 28, 2023. Notifications to those advancing to the final round will be on January 14. 2024.

YOUTH ARTIST COMPETITIONS

Youth Artist Divisions are for students not currently enrolled in an institution of higher learning.
Senior Youth Artist Entrants must be age 15-18 as of June 30, 2024.
Junior Youth Artist Entrants must be age 12-14 as of June 30, 2024.
Elementary Youth Artist Entrants must be age 11 or under as of June 30, 2024.

Students must arrange for their own piano accompanist for the competition.

The competition takes place on Sunday, April 21, 2024 at the Community Music School in Trappe, PA at 2 pm. Students and pianists must be prepared to stay for the winners' recital following the competition adjudication. If a student is not selected, their pianist may leave at the end of adjudication but students need to stay for the recital in any case.

SENIOR YOUTH ARTIST REPERTOIRE
Choice of ONE of the following pieces for flute and piano:

  • C.P.E. Bach - Sonata in G Major “Hamburger” [Edition: Schott]
  • J.S. Bach - Sonata in E Major (BWV 1035): Mvts. I. Adagio ma non tanto and IV. Allegro assai (no repeats) [Edition: Bärenreiter or Henle]
  • W.A. Mozart - Concerto in D Major (K. 314): Mvt. I. Allegro aperto with cadenza of choice [Edition: Bärenreiter or Henle]
  • C. Stamitz - Concerto in G Major (Op. 29): Mvt. I. Allegro with cadenza of choice (no repeats) [any edition]

AND

Choice of ONE of the following pieces for flute and piano:

  • H. Büsser - Prélude et Scherzo [any edition]
  • C. Chaminade - Concertino [any edition]

JUNIOR YOUTH ARTIST REPERTOIRE

  • J.S. Bach - Suite in B Minor: Polonaise (with repeats and DC; no repeats during the DC) [any edition] 
  • B. Marcello - Sonata in F Major: Mvts. III. Largo and IV. Allegro (Mvt. III. Largo - with repeats / Mvt. IV. Allegro - no repeats) [any edition]
  • J. Pepusch* - Sonata in F Major: Mvts. I. Adagio and II. Allegro [any edition]
  • G. Platti* - Sonata No. 2 in G Major: Mvts. I. Grave and II. Allegro (no repeats) [any edition]
