2023 YOUTH ARTIST COMPETITIONS


(For flutists ages 18 years and younger as of March 4, 2023)

 Students enrolled in an undergraduate program at an institute of higher education are not eligible, but may enter the collegiate competition. 

ELIGIBILITY AND RULES

1) There is no residential requirement to enter FSGP’s 2023 competitions.

2) FSGP membership is required. To access entry forms, you must become a member. You may then log in through the FSGP website to access the entry form.

3) Students enrolled in an undergraduate program at an institute of higher education are not eligible for the Youth Artist Competitions, but may enter the Collegiate Artist Competition.

4) The Youth Artist Competitions are in three divisions based on the student’s age as of March 4, 2023:

- Senior Youth Artist (ages 15-18)

- Junior Youth Artist (ages 12-14)

- Elementary Youth Artist (ages 11 and younger)

5) The Youth Artist Competitions entry fee is $30. (This does not include the membership fee.) Please note the entry and membership fees are non-refundable.

6) Previous First Place Winners of a Youth Artist Competition are not eligible to compete again in the same age division but may compete in an a higher division. Previous Second Place and Third Place Winners are eligible to compete again in the same division (subject to age eligibility).

7) First, Second, and Third place prize winners of each age division will be notified on Saturday, March 4, immediately following the competition performances, and invited to perform at the Winners' Recital later the same day.

TIMELINE

1) ENTRY FORM and FEE must be received by 9:00pm (EST) on February 12, 2023.

2) The competition will be held in person on Saturday, March 4, 2023 at the Wells School of Music, West Chester University of Pennsylvania.

3) Information regarding performance times, and rehearsals with pianists, will be shared in early 2023. 


SENIOR YOUTH ARTIST COMPETITION

~For flutists ages 15-18 as of March 4, 2023~

First Place: $200 and Winner's Medal

Second Place: Winner's Medal

Third Place: Winner's Medal

Choose ONE of the following Romantic-to-Modern works performed in its entirety (with piano):

 G. Fauré — FANTAISIE [any edition]

 C. Reinecke — BALLADE, Op. 288 [Zimmermann edition]

 A. Casella — BARCAROLLE ET SCHERZO [any edition]

and

Choose ONE of the following Baroque-to-Classical works performed in its entirety (with piano):

 J.S. Bach — SONATA IN E MINOR, BWV 1034, Mvt. 1 (Adagio ma non tanto) and Mvt. 2 (Allegro, no repeats) [Bärenreiter or Henle edition]

 J-M. Leclair — SONATA IN E MINOR, Op. 2, No. 1: Largo, Allegro (including Altro), no repeats [Zimmermann edition]

 F. Devienne — SONATA NO. 1 in E Minor, Mvt. 1 (Allegro) and Mvt. 2 (Adagio, no repeats) [any edition]



JUNIOR YOUTH ARTIST COMPETITION 

~For flutists ages 11-14 as of March 4, 2023~

PRIZE

First Place: $150 and Winner's Medal

Second Place: Winner's Medal

Third Place: Winner's Medal


REPERTOIRE

Choose ONE of the following Romantic-to-Modern works performed in its entirety (with piano):

 J. Donjon — PAN PASTORALE [any edition]

 G. Brun — ROMANCE [any edition]

 P. Gaubert — MADRIGAL [any edition]

and

Choose ONE of the following Baroque-to-Classical works performed in its entirety (with piano):

 G. Handel — SONATA IN G MAJOR, HWV 363b, Mvt. 2 (Allegro) [any edition]

 G. Telemann — SONATA IN G MAJOR, TWV 41:G9, Mvt. 2 (Allegro) [any edition]



ELEMENTARY YOUTH ARTIST COMPETITION

Competition Entry Forms are only accessible to FSGP members. To enter this competition you must be a current FSGP member. Click here to join. 

Entrants (along with parents/legal guardians and pianist) do not need to pay additional Flute Fair admission fees. Teachers ARE required to pay Flute Fair admission fees.
