2023 Flute Society of Greater Philadelphia Competitions!


There is no residency requirement to enter the competitions.  However, your membership with the Flute Society of Greater Philadelphia must be current to access the entry forms. These forms will become available to members in the coming months. Please renew or join the Flute Society here






2023 COMPETITION REPERTOIRE

This season's competitions return to live performances at West Chester University, as part of the March 4, 2023 Flute Fair.  Complete official rules and guidelines will be available by early September. Following are the deadlines and repertoire, to give potential applicants an early start toward planning for the event.
 

YOUNG ARTIST COMPETITION
Applicants must be age 18-30 as of March 4, 2023.

APPLICATION DEADLINE
Application form, fee, and Preliminary Round Audio Recording must be received by 9:00pm (EST) on December 18, 2022.

REPERTOIRE (PRELIMINARY ROUND)
Bozza — IMAGE for solo Flute  [Leduc]
and
C.P.E. Bach — SONATA IN A MINOR for solo Flute, Mvt. 1, Adagio [any edition]

Six applicants will advance to the Final Round, performed live at the Wells School of Music, West Chester University of PA, on Friday March 3, 2023.

REPERTOIRE (FINAL ROUND)
C.P.E. Bach — SONATA IN A MINOR for solo Flute, Mvt. 1, Adagio [any edition]
and
Finalist's choice of ONE of the following pieces performed in its entirety (with piano):

  • Gaubert – SONATA NO. 3 for flute and piano [Heugel/Leduc edition]
  • Muczynski – SONATA for flute and piano [G. Schirmer]
  • Widor – SUITE for flute and piano [any edition]
  • Zyman – SONATA NO. 1 for flute and piano [Presser] 

COLLEGIATE ARTIST COMPETITION
Applicants must be enrolled in an undergraduate program at an institute of higher education for the complete 2022-2023 school year.

APPLICATION DEADLINE
Application form, fee, and Preliminary Round Audio Recording must be received by 9:00pm (EST) on December 18, 2022.

REPERTOIRE (PRELIMINARY ROUND)
Piazzolla — TANGO ETUDE NO. 3 for solo flute [Lemoine]
and
Boismortier — SUITE IN E MINOR for solo flute, Op. 35, No. 1, Mvt. 1 (Prelude) and Mvt. 3 (Rondeau), from Six Suites for solo flute [Schott]

Twelve applicants will advance to the Final Round, performed live at the Wells School of Music, West Chester University of PA, on Friday March 3, 2023.

REPERTOIRE (FINAL ROUND)
Boismortier — SUITE IN E MINOR for solo flute, Op. 35, No. 1, Mvt. 1 (Prelude) and Mvt. 3 (Rondeau), from Six Suites for solo flute [Schott]
and
Finalist's choice of ONE of the following pieces performed in its entirety (with piano):

  • Gaubert – SUITE for flute and piano [Heugel/Leduc edition]
  • Hindemith – SONATA for flute and piano [Schott]
  • Gieseking – SONATINE for flute and piano [Schott]
  • Poulenc – SONATA for flute and piano [Chester]
YOUTH ARTIST COMPETITIONS

Senior Youth Artist applicants must be age 15-18 as of March 4, 2023.
Junior Youth Artist applicants must be age 12-14 as of March 4, 2023.
Elementary Youth Artist applicants must be age 11 or under as of March 4, 2023.

 

APPLICATION DEADLINE
Application form and fee must be received by 9:00pm (EST) on February 12, 2023.
The competition will be held on Saturday, March 4, 2023 at the Wells School of Music, West Chester University of PA.

SENIOR YOUTH ARTIST REPERTOIRE
Choose ONE of the following Romantic-to-Modern works performed in its entirety (with piano):

  • Fauré  FANTAISIE [any edition]
  • Reinecke  BALLADE, Op. 288 [Zimmermann edition]
  • Casella  BARCAROLLE ET SCHERZO [any edition]
and
Choose ONE of the following Baroque-to-Classical works performed in its entirety (with piano):
  • Bach, J.S.  SONATA IN E MINOR, BWV 1034,
    Mvt. 1 (Adagio ma non tanto) and Mvt. 2 (Allegro, no repeats) [Bärenreiter or Henle edition]
  • Leclair  SONATA IN E MINOR, Op. 2, No. 1: Largo, Allegro (including Altro), no repeats [Zimmermann edition]
  • Devienne  SONATA NO. 1 IN E MINOR, Mvt. 1 (Allegro) and Mvt. 2 (Adagio, no repeats) [any edition]
     

JUNIOR YOUTH ARTIST REPERTOIRE
Choose ONE of the following Romantic-to-Modern works performed in its entirety (with piano):

  • Donjon — PAN PASTORALE [any edition]
  • Brun — ROMANCE [any edition]
  • Gaubert — MADRIGAL [any edition]
and
Choose ONE of the following Baroque-to-Classical works performed in its entirety (with piano):
  • Gossec — TAMBOURIN [any edition]
  • Handel — SONATA IN G MAJOR, HWV 363b, Mvt. 2 (Allegro) [any edition]
  • Telemann — SONATA IN G MAJOR, TWV 41:G9, Mvt. 2 (Allegro) [any edition]

ELEMENTARY YOUTH ARTIST REPERTOIRE
Choose ONE of the following Romantic-to-Modern works performed in its entirety (with piano):
